Who Is Jesus (1) – He is God, He is the Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. ” John 1:1-2

Who do you think Jesus is? John in his first chapter uses a few expressions and names to describe Jesus. In verse 1, he talks about the Word. Cross-referencing to John 1:14, we know that Jesus is the Word become flesh.

In this verse, we learn that Jesus was there already in the beginning before the creation of the world, and that He was not created but was God Himself. We learn of His oneness with God the Father. If you are already Christian then this is not new for you.

This verse also reminds us that Jesus is the Word of God. Could we then replace the expression “Word of God”or anything pointing to that meaning with the name of Jesus? If we do so, we would realize how true it is that the entire bible is about Jesus, it is the Word of God after all. But not only that, it tells us that Jesus can mean so much in our life.

As we read Psalm 119, which is a meditation on the Word of God, and replacing every instance of the expression “Your Word” with Jesus, we learn — just to cite a few — that:

  • By listening to Jesus we have a mean to cleanse our way (v9).
  • By hiding Jesus in our heart (receiving Jesus and making Him the center of our life), we have a way out of our sinful nature (v11)
  • We are to not forget Jesus (we are to keep our thoughts on Him) but delight ourselves in God’s statutes (v16).
  • That when we ask for God’s mercy, it should be so that we may live and keep Jesus (I believe this means to keep on testifying about Him – v17).
  • We can ask for a revival of our soul according (in the name of) Jesus (v25).
  • Our hope is in Jesus Christ for He has given us life (v49-50).
  • Because of Jesus (or what Jesus had done), God has dealt well with His servant (v65).
  • Jesus is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

And the list goes on and on — it is a very long psalm after all. This gives a different perspective on how we read the bible. We read one of the most beautiful promises of the bible in Isaiah 55:10-11

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,
And do not return there,
But water the earth,
And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,
11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Knowing that it is about Jesus, what a joy to know that when God sent His son to earth to save us, He was confident Jesus will prosper in the work of salvation He was sent to finish before returning to Him!

Prayer: Close in prayer, asking God to reveal who Jesus is to you and make it real in your life. Thank Him for having sent His son to save us and give us life. Thank Jesus for prospering in the work of salvation for which He was sent.
